Give them the chance and Gerard and JoAnn Bentryn of Bainbridge Island Vineyard & Winery will tell you why it is so important to make wines from estate grown grapes. That is what they preach and what they practice by only growing grapes compatible with the cooler climate of the Puget Sound AVA such as Muller Thurgau, Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

Their winemaking focus is on light-bodied, fragrant, dry to off-dry white wines with lower alcohol levels and one delicious, late harvest Siegerrebe dessert wine. Bainbridge Island Vineyard and Winery are certified Salmon Safe.

The Bentryn's are happy to host groups who want to learn more about how winemaking starts in the vineyard. They can accommodate large groups, but be sure to call in advance as they do not have a large staff and would have to prepare. They also conduct regularly scheduled tours of their vineyard that you can join.

For Seattleites, the trip is close, about 5 miles up the road from the Seattle / Winslow ferry terminal. You can even keep driving toward the Olympic Peninsula and enjoy a weekend getaway to more Puget Sound wineries.
