If you're as inquisitive as me, you enjoy reading the tasting notes of your favorite wines. I like to see what the winemaker has to say about his/her wines. So, maybe I'm not as serious as some, but when tasting notes make me laugh, I like the wines even more.
There are a few winemakers who know how to make their tasting notes a whole lotta fun. Here are two of my favorites:
Boudreaux Cellars
This Leavenworth based winery is one of my favorite, so when I visited the Boudreaux Cellars website to check out the tasting notes, I became even a bigger fan. Owner/winemaker Rob Newsom doesn't need any fancy words to describe his award winning wines but I'm glad he does. "Is it old? Is it new? Could it be? A dream come true. A gorgeous mystery, a little daring. By bottle three, you won't be caring! The time has come to complicate. The wine and the mind share this fate. Something new. Definitely new. Remember I made it just for you." describes the Boudreaux Cellars 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. Is it possible to be in love with a wine based on tasting notes alone?
Eleven
On Bainbridge Island, Eleven's owners, Matt and Sarah Albee have a way with words; ..."Rosé is one of the great delights of summer. It does not ask for your serious consideration. Rather, it invites you to frolic in the summer sun; it taps one shoulder and runs the other way; peeks out from between the two tall trees at the end of the green and squeals with delight as it swings high up into the blue sky." describes the Eleven 2007 La Primavera Rose'. I would buy this wine based solely on these tasting notes, which reveal the fun nature of the people making the wines.
So maybe they didn't tell me that the wine has "hints of violet", "chewy tobacco" or "white pepper", but these carefree tasting notes shed a whole new light on the winery and wines.
